India is the seventh biggest country in the world. Total area of India is estimated to be 32, 87,240 square
kilometer. Population of India is estimated as 1.32 Billion (as per Census 2016). Hence, it is very
important to develop seamless accessible public transport. Indian Rail Transport is the largest rail network
in Asia and the world's second largest under one management. Indian Railways are a multi-gauge, multitraction system covering over one hundred thousand track kilometers carries near about 30 million
passengers daily and it reaches to the remotest parts of the country. The above results are increasing its
demand year after year. Thus the present study aims to give a brief overlook on the Indian Railway
system and highlights the challenges that need to be take care to achieve the technologically viable
system.
